Welcome to cake Rocket!

Baking and decorating have never been something i grew up knowing how to do or even growing up having a passion for. It developed after becoming a stay at home to my two kids Amelie and Aaden, aged 4 and 3. I was getting bored with the day to day chores and the monotony  of everyday life with 2 toddlers. Needless to say i needed to escape and find something to do to keep my sanity. So i invited my sister-in-law to attend weekly classes at our local Michael’s to learn how to decorate cakes, the Wilton way. Sounded fun. Something different that we could both do to get “our time away”. Not to mention it was cheap. Twenty bucks a class. Mind you buying the supplies was something all together different…

So we started our classes. We would pick up our coffee and meet up at class eager to learn how to be “professionals”. I laugh when i look back on that now, thinking we could learn how to make custom designer cakes for just twenty dollars! But, i never thought this was actually going to lead to something more. I was just trying to find something to do with my time (yes, being a stay at home gets boring).

So my first cake made in class was a complete mess. Some sort of rainbow with some clouds and the words “eat me” across the bottom…needless to say i was nowhere near perfection! But i stuck with it. Each time we would learn something new, a new technique, a  new medium, i kept at it. Always excited to buy new tools to try new techniques. I was proud of myself for keeping up with it. Each new cake presented a new challenge, a new way of trying to figure out how to make something look incredible yet be completely edible. I had found my passion. I still sometimes spent countless hours on my computer researching new techniques, trying to keep up with the world of edible art and each time i see something unique i think i can always make it better:)

My desire to create something stunning out of cake is just the beginning, so i hope. My dream in the not too far distance is to open a shop where i can make cakes all day long. What could be more fun then playing around with cake?

For now, i do what i can out of my kitchen with the time i have. I’m blessed to have an incredibly understanding husband who supports me and allows me the time to be able to create when i can. My kids have also been a blessing for understanding that cake time is mommy time and best to stay out of the kitchen! They are wonderful at playing with each other to allow me the space i need, though there are days when i wonder how much i could get for them on ebay?

I hope this is just the beginning for me…

“My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far today, I have finished 2 bags of M&M’s and a chocolate cake. I feel better already.”
